Gere grew up in Syracuse, New York in a family of five children. His father was an insurance salesman while his mother was a homemaker. He attended North Syracuse Central High School and graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a degree in philosophy.


Gere started his career as an actor in the 1970s. He appeared in several theater productions before making his film debut in "Report to the Commissioner" (1975).
