Evan Gershkovich is a journalist and writer based in Moscow, Russia. He has established himself as an expert in covering politics, society and culture in the country.

Early Life and Education

Born in New York City, Evan grew up on the Upper West Side. He attended Columbia University, where he studied Russian language and literature as well as European history.


After graduating from college, Evan moved to Moscow to work for a news outlet called The Moscow Times. There, he covered everything from breaking news to cultural events to business stories.

During his time at The Moscow Times, Evan wrote about some of the most significant events taking place in Russia. For instance, he covered Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

In addition to his journalism work, Evan has also written essays and other works related to Russia and its people. Some of his writing explores themes like identity and belonging among Russians, particularly those who lived through the Soviet era.

Wanting to have more control over the stories he covered, Evan began working as a freelance journalist in 2016. Since then, he has reported on various topics such as corruption scandals, environmental issues and human rights abuses.
