Ehrenfest was born on January 18, 1880, in Vienna, Austria. He received his early education in Vienna before moving to Zurich, Switzerland to study physics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.

After obtaining his doctorate in physics from the University of Vienna in 1904, he undertook further studies at Göttingen University in Germany with leading physicists like David Hilbert and Max Planck.

Ehrenfest served as a professor of theoretical physics at several universities including Saint Petersburg State University, Leiden University in the Netherlands, and Goethe University Frankfurt.

He developed important theories on statistical mechanics that explained how large collections of particles behave statistically according to basic mechanical laws. His work helped lead to the development of quantum statistics which gave an explanation for physical phenomena at atomic scales.

Ehrenfest also contributed greatly towards developing quantum theory by writing works along with prominent scientists like Albert Einstein. Their ‘Adiabatic Theorem’, stating that if a system undergoes gradual changes it will remain stable is still widely used today.

Additionally, he proposed ‘The Einstein-Ehrenfest pseudo-paradox’ which dealt with a hypothetical contradiction arising between classical and wave-packet mechanics. Though later it was found out that there exists no such paradox but this stimulated many ideas in studying fundamental principles of Quantum Mechanics.

Personal Life

Ehrenfest married Tatyana Alexeyevna Afanasyeva in 1913 when they were both students together at St.Petersburg. They had two sons: Yuri born In Russia (1913) and Paul Jr born during their stay in Leiden (1920).
